Throughout history, health care has usually meant treating the sick. People become ill, and they see a doctor for treatment, and then their care is finished. We call this traditional medical care “sick care.”
Preventing Disease, Treating Sickness
Today, doctors know that there are things we can do to prevent many diseases from starting in the first place. If people receive consistent care throughout the course of a medical problem and afterwards as well, they’ll be better off and can remain active and engaged in life far longer. Comprehensive health care includes preventing disease as well as treating sickness and managing chronic conditions through life.
The move to comprehensive care is important because more people today are getting preventable chronic diseases, a trend that’s driving up health care costs and making good care less accessible for many people.
Most health care experts agree that health care systems should focus on preventing illnesses in the first place and maintaining the patient so the chronic condition doesn’t get worse. In reality, though, too many communities around the world still rely on traditional sick care alone.
Helping People Get and Stay Healthy
Our commitment to The Promise of Health Care follows decades of work to advance the shift from sick care to comprehensive care. From helping smokers quit through our employee Health & Wellness program, to educating expectant parents on pregnancy through the online BABYCENTER® community, to helping caregivers keep themselves healthy as they care for a loved one through The Caregiver Initiative, we play an active role in assisting people around the world better manage their health.
Programs that promote prevention and disease management and those that provide effective incentives for all stakeholders are vital to promoting good health. Another important part of getting and staying healthy is being able to understand and communicate with your doctor and engage in your health decisions. People who understand health, that is, are “health literate,” seek care earlier, understand what their doctor advises, and can seek out health information and assess its reliability.
