Sub-Saharan Africa, the region in which Dr. Ernest O. Nyamato works, is home to nearly 65 percent of the estimated 33.2 million people living in the world with HIV/AIDS. In 2006, Johnson & Johnson and UCLA teamed up to create the Management Development Institute (MDI), a one-week intensive training program for health care professionals like Dr. Nyamato.
Turning Doctors Into Successful Managers
MDI is designed to enhance the management and leadership skills of health care leaders of East African organizations devoted to the care, treatment and support of people and their families living with HIV/AIDS. The program is delivered by an international group of world-class management faculty, including local practitioners who help bring the African point of view.
“Coming from a medical background, I was a self-taught manager,” says Dr. Nyamato, who attended the program. “Before MDI, I was learning the hard way by reading books and articles on leadership research. However, attending the MDI training was like ‘compass-driven’ strategic planning. It pointed me in the right direction.”
That direction led to forming a strategic plan for his staff at the Liverpool Voluntary Counseling & Testing centers that focuses on better communication between staff to improve the response to patients’ expectations and feedback. “You can get a lot of information from a map, but if you don’t know where to start looking, then you end up wasting a lot of time,” Dr. Nyamato says.
Organizational Structure Is Half the Equation
Assessing community needs, aligning operations with a mission and strategy, budgeting and human resources management were just a few areas discussed in the 2007 MDI training sessions, held in April and September. Participants in such sessions are encouraged to pass along the management and leadership skills they learn to all levels of their organization. By doing so, the knowledge to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS is spread throughout Africa’s sub-Saharan region.
“When a client walks in, they expect to get tested, know their status, receive professional counseling or be placed on a treatment regimen,” says Dr. Nyamato. “The client has a holistic view, and they expect the same quality of service from the organization.”
