Hope and Health for the Little Ones


	Children affected by HIV/AIDS in rural China often don’t have ready access to health care services, medicines, education or psychological support. Many may never even leave their villages, remaining uninformed about the world that lies beyond: a world of cities, universities, large hospitals and opportunities. Fuyang AIDS Orphan Salvation Association (AOS) in China partners with local and international organizations to give HIV/AIDS-infected and HIV/AIDS-affected children the health care, education and emotional support they need. Since 2003, AOS has rescued approximately 800 children affected by HIV/AIDS, many of them orphans. The organization’s support extends to families and relatives as well, reaching more than 8,000 people in dozens of villages. Johnson & Johnson supports three key AOS initiatives: Sponsoring children to attend vocational schools to help prepare them for better job opportunities and economic independence Providing transportation for infected children to obtain treatment and nutritional support Operating a summer camp for AOS children ages 5 to 16 who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS Lifting Spirits The annual Fuyang AOS Beijing Summer Camp offers children an adventure in the exciting Beijing metropolis. Johnson & Johnson employees volunteer at the camp and develop games and contests for the children. Along with the fun and games, the camp is designed to teach the children more about HIV/AIDS and to reduce discrimination associated with the virus. The program also exposes participants to higher education and career options outside their remote villages. “Children who have lost parents to HIV/AIDS are just as deserving of education and information as any other children. They need our love, care and support,” says Cecilia Xie, an employee from Johnson & Johnson Medical (China) Ltd. “I was fortunate to have the chance to join the summer camp and work with other volunteers who had the same conviction in removing the stigma and discrimination associated with AIDS. The day I spent with the lovely children strengthened my belief that everyone can make a real difference in the war against HIV/AIDS.”
