Ending Violence Against Women

Partnerships End Violence, Prevent Disease

Violence against women is both a cause and a consequence of HIV/AIDS. Consider these facts:

  • Women who have violent partners often cannot negotiate safer sex practices, placing them at greater risk of contracting HIV.
  • Many women who test positive for HIV are often discriminated against by the community and subjected to physical abuse from partners.

Recognizing the connection between violence against women and HIV/AIDS, Johnson & Johnson has partnered with UNIFEM over the past five years to provide grants to organizations in five countries through the United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. Project leaders from these countries are working to address the intersection between violence against women and girls and HIV/AIDS.

Men Speak Out
Breakthrough is one of the organizations benefiting from Johnson & Johnson support. Breakthrough is an international human rights organization that works to transform public attitudes and advance equality, justice and dignity for individuals in India and the United States.

In 2008, Breakthrough launched the Bell Bajao (Ring the Bell) campaign that encourages men and boys to come forward and take a stand against domestic violence. The campaign included three 60-second public service announcements (PSAs), radio and press advertisements; mobile video vans and public events; and a micro site www.bellbajao.org and blog. The campaign was supported on the ground by leadership training and capacity-building programs with community-based organizations, youth groups, service providers and law enforcement agencies.

“One out of every three women faces violence behind closed doors, so whether it’s ringing a doorbell to stop a crime or speaking out, we need men and boys to do their part to ensure that women in our communities are living free of violence,” says Sonali Khan, Country Director – India for Breakthrough.

Khan says the Bell Bajao PSAs have reached over 130 million people in India. “Before we launched the PSAs, we had limited visibility and few resources,” says Khan. “Now, many groups are coming forward to support our efforts, including the government. As a result, we have developed three new PSAs and are building other programs that will help stop the violence against women.”

The Impact
“The initiatives we support show the significant impact that partnerships between the United Nations and private sector can have – to go beyond grant-making and make advances in the field of ending violence against women,” says Adriana Quinones, Manager, United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. “From the results that have emerged to date, we have garnered valuable insights into establishing effective referral systems and forging collaborations between women’s groups with men and boys. We’re pleased to count Johnson & Johnson among our partners in this cutting-edge collaboration.”
