Caring for HIV-Positive Orphans

CloseShare This Page

In 1998, a young orphan girl was admitted to the San Jose de Malambo Home in Arrijan, Panama, and she changed the shelter forever. Established in 1890, the San Jose de Malambo Home provides shelter, education, and health care to underserved children and young mothers. While this still remains its focus, when Malambo took in that HIV-positive girl 10 years ago, its goals broadened to include care and shelter for HIV-infected orphans.

A Holistic Approach to Care
Johnson & Johnson supports Malambo’s Whole Attention Program, which gives 20 HIV-infected children and young mothers access to medical care, housing, clothing, nutritional guidance, education, recreation and psychological and legal assistance. Malambo also works with local education ministries to prepare the HIV-positive children for public school. It is estimated that more than 160 people indirectly benefit from this program, including the children’s relatives and friends outside Malambo Home.

Malambo Provides Additional Support
Overall, the Malambo Home cares for 200 orphans, who receive health care, education, and psychological and nutritional guidance. Malambo is committed to teaching these children about HIV/AIDS, thus helping to decrease the stigma around the disease.
