So read the email from, Adnan A. Siddiqui, Lead, Pakistan Contribution Committee & Franchise Manager, DePuy, Johnson & Johnson Medical Pakistan, when he was asked by a colleague what the situation was like in that region. According to many media reports, the scale of the disaster in Pakistan caused by heavy monsoon rains and floods is massive. One-fifth of the country is now underwater, and entire villages have been swept away. Some 900,000 dwellings have been damaged or destroyed. More than 15 million people have been affected by the floods and are in need of emergency assistance, including food, clean water, shelter and medical services. Continued heavy rains have worsened the situation, destroying hundreds of thousands of homes and crops. Children are at the greatest risk for disease.
Johnson & Johnson has been operating in Pakistan since 1967 and we are present in all four provinces. All three business units of Johnson & Johnson (Consumer, Pharmaceutical, and Medical Device & Diagnostics) are represented with approximately 600 employees.
In the region, Johnson & Johnson is committed to helping out the people of Pakistan. Our immediate response includes cash and product donations from Johnson & Johnson Pakistan and the shipment of three Johnson & Johnson Disaster Relief Modules containing products from our Consumer, Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices and Diagnostics businesses. We are working with several partner organizations to reach the affected areas with those products. We are also coordinating cash donations to organizations known to us and to our regional colleagues to assist with immediate response activities.
In addition, we continue to work with our longtime partners the region – AmeriCares, Direct Relief International, Heart to Heart, UNICEF, The Citizens Foundation, and World Vision. While this disaster continues to affect the region, we will continue to offer support as needed, and also respond accordingly to help in the initial phases of recovery and rebuilding efforts in Pakistan.
