A Healthier Russia

Olga Vasukova’s passion for improving health care is both professional and personal. After a Cordis stent helped save her father’s life, Olga’s personal call to action became to help support better health care for families in her homeland of Russia

Time for Change
Not too long ago, The Kremlin directed every city to take “decisive yet prudent steps” to modernize health care throughout Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

Eager to lend a hand were the more than 1,000 employees of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies who serve Russia and the CIS. Among them was Olga Vasukova, Strategic Affairs Director, Johnson & Johnson, LLC, Medical Russia.

Vasukova’s passion for improving health care is both professional and personal. In 2003, while she was studying in the U.S., Vasukova’s “Papa” came for a visit. One night after dinner, he suffered chest pains and was rushed to the hospital. A stent made by Cordis Corporation was inserted into Nikolay Vasukov’s restricted artery to keep it open. The surgery was a success and an inspiration for Vasukov. When the Kremlin called for major upgrades to the Russian health care system, it became Vasukova’s personal call to action to help support better health care for families in her homeland.

“Not surprisingly, our people undertake this mission with a results-driven mix of professional commitment, youthful vigor and intense personal interest,” says Naira Adamian, Country Manager, Janssen-Cilag Russia.

Civic Initiatives
Throughout Russia and the CIS, local Johnson & Johnson companies support training for medical professionals and help fund other efforts that further the new health care agenda. For this commitment, the Russian government gave Johnson & Johnson the Annual Corporate Social Responsibility Award, which recognized a number of initiatives, including:

  • The contribution of more than $100,000 to victims of a terrorist attack on a school in Beslan, Chechnya,
  • Support of children with cerebral palsy, congenital heart disease, leukemia and blindness and
  • Support of HIV/AIDS philanthropic programs.

Coming Together in Moscow
In June 2006, Johnson & Johnson, LLC opened a new office in the heart of Moscow to bring local employees under one roof for the first time. A large glass panel with Our Credo etched inside is the first thing employees see when they come to work each day.

Also in 2006, Johnson & Johnson, LLC received the Moscow Employer of the Year Award from Human Resources Management, a respected Russian business journal. Meanwhile, some of the consumer company brands were recognized with the Effie Gold and Effie “Most Trusted Brand” awards for the awareness and trust they’ve earned among consumers.

By the end of 2006, Johnson & Johnson, LLC was the largest health care company in Russia. “We see this business milestone as a positive side effect of our wholehearted effort to support the government as it seeks to provide affordable, good-quality health care for every Russian adult and child,” says Vladmimir Makatsaria, Managing Director, Johnson & Johnson Medical Russia/CIS.
