Small Acts of Caring Have a Big Impact

CloseShare This Page

Small acts of caring can make a big impact on families, communities and an entire country. This is something that Pu Ping, Senior Director, Strategic Channel Management, Johnson & Johnson Medical (China) Ltd. learned firsthand as a volunteer, when 310 employees from across China helped 150 children with special needs visit the Shanghai World Expo.

“I’m proud that I could volunteer to let the children enjoy the Expo, caring for them as my own,” says Pu Ping. “Like the theme of the Expo—Better City, Better Life—our children will have a better future if we can give them a healthy and happy childhood.”

Johnson & Johnson is a Global Sponsor of the USA Pavilion at World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China, which runs from May 1 to October 31, 2010. More than 200 countries and international organizations are participating, making this the largest World Expo in history.

Celebrating the World Community
Visiting the Expo gave the children the opportunity to learn more about cultures from around the world. Pu Ping spent the day with a young boy named Li Xiaozhao and together they visited pavilions from Columbia, Italy, South Africa, the United States and other countries.

“At first, he was nervous to be in such an international crowd of people. I told him there are many different cultures and that makes the world more colorful, and there are always things people can learn from each other,” says Pu Ping. “He began to appreciate these differences and loved to communicate with others.”

For Pu Ping, viewing the Expo through the eyes of these children made this an unforgettable experience. “I saw their curiosity and passion for our world,” she says. “When other people at the Expo asked us about our activity, I really felt proud from the bottom of my heart to be standing with the other employee volunteers.”

Through volunteer activities and several other programs running during the Shanghai World Expo, Johnson & Johnson is encouraging and celebrating acts of caring throughout China.

“We are excited to be able to create opportunities for people across China – and our employees – to engage in extending acts of caring while they attend the Expo,” says Wenjian Xie, President of Johnson & Johnson Medical (China) Ltd. “The Shanghai World Expo allows us to celebrate the values that unify us as a world community, and as a global company with a strong tradition of caring.”

Helping Others to Make a Difference
Inside the USA Pavilion, a 3D interactive display celebrates stories of caring taking place throughout China. Visitors are able to use their mobile phones to play a virtual game to learn more about and vote for philanthropic and social responsibility program categories that mean the most to them. Through the website jnj.com.cn, people throughout China can make a difference by casting their votes, too.

Categories include programs focusing on women’s and children’s health, preventing diseases, expanding access to health care services and community responsibility. When the Shanghai Expo concludes at the end of October, Johnson & Johnson will make a donation to the program category that receives the most votes.

Johnson & Johnson established its first joint venture in China in 1985. Today, the Company, through its subsidiaries operating in China, employs about 7,000 people. In the spirit of “Because We Care, We Act” (Yin Ai Er Sheng) the company helps people care for others through high quality products, education programs, philanthropy and many other initiatives, including its partnership with the Beijing 2008 Olympics and Paralympic Games.
