Johnson & Johnson Strengthens Wellness & Prevention Platform with Acquisition of Human Performance Institute™

New Brunswick, NJ (December 19, 2008) - Extending its capabilities in wellness and prevention, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) announced today it has acquired LGE Performance Systems, Inc., a privately held company located in Orlando, Florida, known as Human Performance Institute™. Human Performance Institute™, which develops science-based training programs to improve employee engagement and productivity, will operate within the Johnson & Johnson Wellness & Prevention business platform. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Human Performance Institute™ is both a campus-based institute and client-location provider of training programs, including its Corporate Athlete® course, designed to manage energy to create and sustain high performance. Human Performance Institute’s technology of managing energy is measurement based and grounded in the sciences of performance psychology, exercise physiology and nutrition.

“Health care expenses are the most rapidly growing cost component for employers,” said Nicholas J. Valeriani, Vice President, Office of Strategy & Growth, who is responsible for Johnson & Johnson’s new Wellness & Prevention business established in October with the acquisition of HealthMedia, Inc. “Efforts must be focused on keeping employees well, engaged and productive to help reverse that trend and lead to improved corporate performance. The programs of Human Performance Institute™, focused on energy, engagement and productivity, can make an important contribution to that effort.

“As we indicated when we announced the creation of the Wellness & Prevention business platform, Johnson & Johnson’s focus on health and wellness among our own employees has helped to reduce our per capita health-plan costs and significantly improved overall employee health and productivity. We are confident that a combination of proven products and services like those of Human Performance Institute™ with Johnson & Johnson’s demonstrated capacity to deliver health and productivity outcomes will enable our customers to create more engaged and productive workforces.”

“Managing energy, not time, is the key to creating enduring high performance on the job as well as good health and balance in life,” said Jim Loehr, Ed.D., Chief Creative Officer and founder of Human Performance Institute™. Dr. Loehr, who has dedicated more than 30 years to the optimization of performance by business leaders, athletes and the military, is a best-selling author of books related to the principles of energy, engagement and productivity, including “The Power of Full Engagement,” which he co-authored, and “The Power of Story.”

Human Performance Institute™, established in 1991, is led by Chris Osorio, President. “This union with Johnson & Johnson will add significant strategic global capability to Human Performance Institute™ offerings,” he said. “As a company focused on employee health, wellness and performance for decades, with documented improvements in costs and outcomes, Johnson & Johnson has earned significant credibility as a leader in this field, and we are confident that the addition of Human Performance Institute™ will complement those strengths with important capabilities. Johnson & Johnson's unique decentralized management philosophy will allow Human Performance Institute™ to continue to operate as a separate entity focused on its customers, but now with access to the resources of the world's most broadly based healthcare company.”
