Energy Use and Alternative Energy

Investment in renewable energy is key to maintaining a healthy planet. We have set goals to augment the percentage of renewable energy in our overall portfolio and increase the energy efficiency of our facilities and transportation fleet.

Core to improving our energy efficiency is our Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Reduction Capital Funding Program, which includes a $40 million per year capital fund to support programs that reduce energy use. Since 2005, 150 energy reduction projects have been approved and 80 have been completed. In 2011, 25 new projects were approved for funding.

In 2010, over 40 percent of our energy portfolio came from renewable energy sources, and we tripled our on-site solar power capacity from four megawatts (MW) to 12 MW via seven solar power projects completed in 2010.

Additionally, all new Johnson & Johnson construction projects as well as renovations costing $5 million or more must be certified to the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green-building standard. Our World Headquarters building has received the LEED Gold Certification for Existing Buildings.

As of December 2009, 80 energy-reduction projects had been approved since 2005 and 62 completed. For approximately $187 million in capital, we anticipate these projects will collectively reduce CO2 emissions by 129,000 metric tons annually and provide an internal rate of return of nearly 19 percent. To date, these projects have resulted in approximately 247,000 megawatt hours of cumulative energy savings per year. It should be noted, however, that some of these projects have left the portfolio as facilities have been closed or sold.
