Biodiversity
We recognize ecosystems are fragile and believe preserving biodiversity and ensuring the sustainable and fair use of biological resources is an important and shared responsibility. Respecting Biodiversity spells out the actions we take to conserve biodiversity in areas over which we have influence and protect its benefits to human health.
To this end, all of our facilities or companies have a biodiversity conservation plan. In 2010, we completed 79 biodiversity projects. Of these 44 percent support biodiversity at external locations, 19 percent enhance and conserve biodiversity on our properties, 8 percent sponsor endangered species, and 6 percent protect a habitat from environmental threats. The remaining 23 percent constitute a variety of other conservation projects. From 2006 through 2010, we completed a total of 468 biodiversity projects, with 52 percent supporting biodiversity at external locations, 19 percent enhancing and conserving biodiversity onsite, 6 percent sponsoring endangered species and 4 percent protecting a habitat from environmental threats.
Around the world, our partnerships between our operating companies, nonprofit organizations and other conservation groups allow us to restore and protect more ecosystems than we could on our own. For example, we entered into a three-year Global Development Alliance with the World Wildlife Fund in 2008 to conserve important species and ecosystems in Africa and Nepal. Johnson & Johnson also has long-standing relationships with many conservation organizations, including The Nature Conservancy, The Wilderness Society and the Conservation Fund.
