Building Health Care Capacity
Management Development Institute
In 2006, Johnson & Johnson and UCLA teamed up to create the Management Development Institute (MDI), a one-week intensive training program for health care professionals in sub-Saharan Africa.
The program is delivered by an international group of world-class management faculty, including local practitioners who help bring the African point of view. MDI aims to enhance the management and leadership skills of health care leaders of East African organizations devoted to the care, treatment and support of people and their families living with HIV/AIDS.
Assessing community needs, aligning operations with a mission and strategy, budgeting and human resources management are just a few areas discussed in MDI training sessions. Participants are encouraged to pass along the management and leadership skills they learn to all levels of their organization. By doing so, the knowledge to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS is spread throughout Africa’s sub-Saharan region.
Supporting Nurses
Johnson & Johnson supports programs promoting the nursing profession and provide leadership and development opportunities to further the field. In Africa, we teach student nurses basic skills in surgery, trauma and midwifery. In the U.S., we manage “Discover Nursing,” a campaign to educate the public about careers in nursing. Nurses from around the world learn about essential business management techniques through programs we support including the Wharton Fellows Program, SOS Children’s Villages and the School Health Leadership Program.
Initiating Good Management Practices
Throughout the world, the health care landscape has changed dramatically over the past several years, so having a broad view of the industry is critical. For the past 10 years, we have partnered with INSEAD, one of Europe’s leading business schools, on the Healthcare Management Initiative (HMI), providing programs for leaders that support research, teaching and education in health care.
Taking Leaders Up a Level
For nearly a decade, we have partnered with Singapore Management University to provide management and operations training to senior managers from hospitals throughout Asia. Known as the Johnson & Johnson Regional Hospital Management Program, this annual week-long program offers 50 hospital leaders from various Asian countries advanced training in management principles and business operations. Professors from schools in Singapore and the United States lead the training sessions.
