Sustainable Sourcing

Sustainability reaches far beyond the walls of any one company, from the raw materials purchased to the external partners that manufacture some of our products. Working closely with our supply chain partners, we seek to ensure the sourcing and use of raw materials is sustainable and that manufacturing and production processes are socially and environmentally responsible.

Procurement Sustainability Initiative
Through our Procurement Sustainability Initiative (PSI), we evaluate several non-financial performance factors when contracting with suppliers, seeking to partner with those who are aligned with our sustainability commitments. Across 13 broad categories of goods and services we purchase, we look for suppliers who protect and promote worker safety, health and well-being; provide materials and services with a reduced or positive environmental impact; and respect and share our efforts to preserve communities and cultures connected to the origin, processing, manufacturing, use and disposal of materials and services. The PSI sets forth performance expectations in each of these 13 procurement categories.

In addition, the PSI stewards our Healthy Future 2015 goals associated with our suppliers. We have developed a Supplier Sustainability Toolkit  that offers guidance to our suppliers.

Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)
Since 2008, we have disclosed our own energy use and emissions to the CDP and actively encourage our supply chain partners to participate in the CDP’s Supply Chain Program. This collaborative program encourages participants to measure their energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and assess their reduction plans, with an option to report them publicly. To date, suppliers representing approximately $2 billion of our spending have participated.

By the end of 2010, more than 85 percent of the suppliers we approached chose to participate in the program. We believe that completing this inventory and reporting the results publicly are the first steps in better greenhouse gas emissions management. You can find our reports at the CDP website.

Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative
We participate in the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative to drive industry efficiencies and improvements in the supply chain through collaboration. Participants include major pharmaceutical companies that share a vision of better social, economic and environmental outcomes for all suppliers and manufacturers involved in the pharmaceutical supply chain.
