Environmental Management

As a global health care company with diverse operations around the world, managing our impact is complex and far reaching. We aim to do this through good stewardship of natural resources, controlling and reducing where feasible any substantial harmful impact of our products and processes.

Our Worldwide Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) department provides advice and assistance to the local affiliate management team that are responsible for environmental compliance at our facilities around the world. This organization monitors performance and compliance, sets and monitors progress against overall corporate goals, sponsors topic-specific integrated teams, oversees EHS assessments of our operations, and drives our transparency efforts in the area of EHS performance. The EHS Leadership Council coordinates these efforts and is composed of business franchise and operating company EHS leaders.

Worldwide EHS sponsors several integrated internal teams for sustainable packaging and marketing, product stewardship, emerging issues, industrial hygiene, occupational safety and other key topics, enabling a holistic approach to these issues across businesses. In addition, each of our three business segments – Consumer Products, Pharmaceuticals, and Medical Devices and Diagnostics – is overseen by councils or executives responsible for the promotion of sustainability throughout their businesses. In our Consumer Products group, a vice president for Sustainability guides their efforts while our other sectors are overseen by Sustainability councils.

The Science, Technology & Sustainability Committee, composed of non-employee Directors, assists the board in identifying and comprehending significant emerging science and technology policy and public health issues and trends that may impact the Company’s overall business strategy. They also review the Company’s policies, programs and practices on environment, health and sustainability.
