EARTHWARDS® Recognized Products:

Earning EARTHWARDS® Recognition
To receive EARTHWARDS® recognition, teams take a product through a four-step evaluation process.

  1. Satisfy prerequisites
Teams answer a series of questions that gauge their general understanding of their product:
    What materials are we using?
    Where do they come from?
What happens to the product after it’s used?
  2. Undergo screening
The team takes the product through a screening that examines the product’s impacts across the full life cycle from material sourcing to end-of-life.
  3. Identify improvements
The team must show at least three significant improvements across the seven goal areas in order to be recognized as an EARTHWARDS® product.
  4. Submit for review
The team then submits a scorecard with their results to the review board of both internal and external product experts. The board then determines if the product warrants EARTHWARDS® recognition and provides suggestions for additional improvements.

We are already over half way towards achieving our goal of 60 Earthwards® recognized products by 2015. At the end of 2012, we had 36 Earthwards® recognized products. The recognized products span all three sectors with Consumer having 20, Medical Devices and Diagnostics 10, and Pharmaceuticals 6. Some of the biggest Johnson & Johnson company brands have products that have achieved Earthwards® recognition including JOHNSON’S® NATURAL® Baby Wash, o.b.® Tampons, INVEGA® Sustenna™ (paliperidone) and ACUVUE® OASYS® Brand Contact Lens.

The infograpghic below provides an overview of seven additional Earthwards® recognized products and examples of the improvements they have achieved.
