As Part of the “In the Zone for Crohn’s” Campaign, Centocor, Inc. Will Donate $10,000 for Each Touchdown Garrard Scores in 2008 to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America
Horsham, PA (September 4, 2008) – Centocor, Inc. announced today a partnership with David Garrard, quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars®, to raise awareness and funds for Crohn’s disease education and research. Through the program, In the Zone for Crohn’s, Centocor will make a donation of $10,000 to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America for each touchdown Garrard scores during the 2008 NFL season. More information can be found at www.CrohnsintheZone.com, where visitors can also track Garrard’s progress throughout the season. Crohn’s disease, combined with a similar inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) called ulcerative colitis (UC), affects more than one million Americans.
“Since being diagnosed with Crohn’s, I have been eager to do my part to raise awareness and serve as an inspiration for people living with the disease,” said David Garrard, a spokesperson for the In the Zone for Crohn’s program, which is sponsored by Centocor. ”It’s important for people living with Crohn’s disease to believe in themselves and their abilities despite their disease, and I hope the In the Zone program will inspire people to do just that.”
Despite Crohn’s disease, Garrard continues to succeed on the field and has scored nearly 30 touchdowns over the past two seasons as the Jaguars starting quarterback. After leading Jacksonville to the second-round of the playoffs in 2007, David is entering his second season as their starting quarterback.
“We commend David for creating visibility for an often misunderstood and underestimated chronic digestive disease. Crohn’s disease exacts its toll among people of all ages, and David’s professional career can inspire all IBD patients and supporters of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation mission to speak louder and make this cause a high priority for raising funds,” said Richard Geswell, President of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. “Through the generous contribution of Centocor and the In the Zone for Crohn’s program, we look forward to enhancing our educational activities, support materials and services for those Americans living with this debilitating disease.”
The program will kick off with the Jaguars’ first game of the season on September 7 and will culminate at the end of the 2008 season when Garrard will present a check based on his total touchdown performance on behalf of Centocor to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America.
“The In the Zone program is just one way that Centocor hopes to further support people living with Crohn’s disease and the leading patient advocacy organization dedicated to IBD, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America,” said Kim Taylor, President of Centocor, Inc.
About David Garrard
David Garrard knows first hand the painful, debilitating and often embarrassing effects of Crohn's disease. Prior to the 2004 football season, Garrard began experiencing the excruciating symptoms associated with the disease, lost a significant amount of weight and missed several weeks of pre-season training. Following his diagnosis, David underwent surgery and, in consultation with his doctor, began a treatment regimen. David returned to the playing field by the start of the 2004 season and has since led the Jaguars to two consecutive playoff appearances.
About Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract, affects approximately 1.4 million Americans, including approximately 150,000 pediatric patients. The cause of Crohn’s disease is not known, but the disease is associated with an abnormality of the immune system that could be triggered by viral or bacterial infections, a genetic predisposition or diet. Symptoms of Crohn’s disease can vary but often include abdominal pain and tenderness, frequent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, weight loss and fever. There is currently no cure for Crohn’s disease.
