“Passage of the 21st Century Cures Act demonstrates what can be accomplished when patients’ needs are placed at the center of the health care discussion. This landmark bipartisan legislation will dramatically improve patient care, by updating clinical treatment protocols, establishing new regulatory pathways for evaluating experimental treatments, improving access to unconventional treatment options and incentivizing public and private sector research investments. Most significant is the federal commitment to guarantee funding to the National Institutes of Health to support bold, early research initiatives that may ultimately prevent Alzheimer’s disease and other mental health disorders, cancer, and certain pediatric conditions. Over the next 24 hours, 353,000 babies will be born into a world that’s changing faster than ever, and they will be joining a generation of two billion people expected to be born from 2011 to 2025.
