Achieving Earthwards® Recognition
Earthwards® recognition is an honor reserved for our most improved products. When a product achieves at least three significant improvements across our seven impact areas, a board of internal and external experts determines if it warrants Earthwards® recognition. In addition to evaluating products for first-time Earthwards® recognition, the board – including members from Practice Greenhealth and the S.C. Johnson School of Management at Cornell University – also reviews the Earthwards® approach on an annual basis.
Earthwards® recognized products demonstrate innovative thinking, more sustainable solutions and deliver value for customer and consumers. Teams who receive Earthwards® recognition are congratulated and rewarded for their innovative thinking by Johnson & Johnson leadership. In the past five years, more than 200 employees have directly participated in Earthwards®, which helps Johnson & Johnson deliver on our Healthy Future 2015 commitments and address our customers’ growing demand for more sustainable products. As of June 1, 2016, our efforts expanded our Earthwards® portfolio to include 85 recognized products, surpassing our 2015 goal to make sustainability improvements to 60 of our products.

Consumer Case Study: AVEENO® PURE RENEWAL™ Shampoo and Conditioner products earned Earthwards® recognition as a result of investing in individuals creating beautiful change in their communities, reducing energy use by converting a transportation route from truck to rail and using the ingredient NATRASURF™ as part of its sulfate-free formula. NATRASURF™, the first personal care ingredient of its kind, is a potato starch-based polymeric surfactant with the same performance as traditional surfactants.

MD&D Case Study: The Sterilmed® Trocar, a small instrument used in surgical procedures, is collected, reprocessed and sold as a reprocessed device. The Sterilmed Trocar received Earthwards® recognition because it represents a 50 percent improvement in product waste versus an original single-use trocar device: Where an original trocar begins its life using raw materials and ends its life in a landfill, the Sterilmed Trocar is collected, reprocessed, reused and then ends its life at a facility that creates energy out of waste.

Janssen Case Study: ZYTIGA® is used to treat prostate cancer, which is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and the fifth most common cancer overall. By applying green chemistry principles in the formulation of this product, Janssen doubled the process yield and realized significant reductions in raw material use, water use and hazardous waste generation.
