Help for Earthquake Victims

Today's Top Reads Close

The recent devastation caused by massive earthquakes in Chile and Haiti have affected the lives of so many families. The Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies is working with partners on the ground in both countries to deliver critical supplies and medicines to help save lives.
In Chile, one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded has left approximately two million people without food, water, electricity and other basic services. As part of our initial disaster relief efforts in Chile, we are contributing products from our Consumer, Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices businesses.

Our ongoing efforts in Haiti include cash and product donations coming from our Consumer, Pharmaceuticals, and Medical Devices businesses in the U.S. and several countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Several Johnson & Johnson companies in Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Europe are also contributing.

Beyond supporting immediate needs, we are working with our partners to determine how we can assist in the long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts in Chile and Haititi

Restoring Health Care Capacity in Haiti
One-third of the Canape-Vert Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was damaged and two operating rooms were destroyed as a result of the earthquake that struck on January 12. Even in these challenging circumstances the hospital’s dedicated doctors, nurses and health care staff manage to treat more than 300 injured people and perform 25 surgeries each day to help victims of the earthquake.

Carol Shattuck, Chief of Staff at AmeriCares, visited the Canape-Vert Hospital as part of the organization’s relief efforts in Haiti. “I met Nayola Saint-Paul, an earthquake survivor who suffered from serious injuries to her head, as she was about to get ready for surgery,” says Carol. “At only 14 years of age, this beautiful young girl experienced more pain from her injuries than many of us feel in a lifetime. Despite the devastation, I am inspired by the commitment of the relief workers we meet on the ground in Port-au-Prince. They want to find solutions to help the people of Haiti.”

Johnson & Johnson has partnered with AmeriCares since 1986 to deliver donated medicines, medical supplies and humanitarian assistance during emergency medical situations. “Canape-Vert’s pharmacy was depleted within days of the earthquake. The antibiotics, sutures, pain medicines and other essential medicines that we delivered were put to immediate use and are helping many survivors,” says Carol.

Beyond supporting immediate needs, we will be supporting long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts focused on health care services addressing the needs of women and children.

Helping Children and Families
The damage from the earthquake has forced families out of their homes and into the streets, leaving children vulnerable to disease and potentially dangerous situations. “The destruction is everywhere and it is still hard for emergency responders to reach many injured people at this point,” says Ian Rodgers, Save the Children’s emergency response adviser who is currently helping with the relief efforts in Haiti. “Countless children and families need safe places to stay as well as basic household items to help them meet their immediate needs.”

Johnson & Johnson supports Save the Children to help reduce the impact of this disaster on children and families. Save the Children has been working in Haiti since 1978 and has committed to a five-year “build back better” initiative, which will help families to rebuild their communities over the long term. The organization is addressing children’s needs by providing shelter, child protection, water and sanitation, nutrition support and health services. In addition to distributing essential hygiene and family supplies, such as toothbrushes, towels and soaps, blankets, mosquito nets, and cans for water, Save the Children is also working to open child-friendly spaces in large camps of displaced families so children can engage in structured activities and begin to recover from the catastrophe.

Johnson & Johnson has a legacy of supporting disaster relief efforts, beginning with the 1906 earthquake and fires that devastated San Francisco. Today, we work with key international relief partners and local affiliates to address urgent needs around the world. We are seeking input and guidance from our partners on the ground to help the people of Chile and Haiti recover and rebuild.
