As part of my role within the Johnson & Johnson Global Health services organization, I have been privileged with the opportunity to lead our company’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of our employees around the world. At Johnson & Johnson we understand that an investment in the health of our employees is an investment in the health of our company, which is why I’m glad to announce our proud support for National Employee Wellness Month. This annual initiative, sponsored by the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, Virgin Health Miles and Stop Obesity Alliance, and supported by nearly 100 other companies, helps business leaders share and develop successful strategies for the prevention of chronic disease and maintenance of good health for employees. Throughout our 125 year history we’ve led the way in our commitment to the health of our employees and we are happy to support an initiative that will help foster a culture of health in other companies.
While a focus on a healthy and productive workforce has long been a hallmark of our company, Johnson & Johnson’s commitment to employee health and wellness began officially with former Chairman James Burke’s pledge to make the employees of Johnson & Johnson’s Family of Companies the healthiest in the world. Since that time the company has developed a comprehensive strategy for improving employee health that focuses on identifying key health risk factors, and developing interventions that allow employees to address these risk factors in sustainable ways. Over the last 30 years thousands of employees, such as Jessica Empestan, have used the wellness and prevention programs offered by Johnson & Johnson to improve their health in substantive and lasting ways.
We’ve realized outstanding benefits from these programs. Johnson & Johnson employees are significantly less likely than the general public and their counterparts in the industry to be at high risk for key health risk factors including, high blood pressure, poor nutrition, obesity, physical inactivity and tobacco use. Our company has realized tremendous gains as well with an annual per employee savings of $565 and an average return on investment between $1.88 and $3.92 for every dollar spent. As such, we should not become complacent and should always strive to be the best we can in serving our population and the next generations to come
As a leader in the promotion of employee health and wellness, we are proud to support National Employee Wellness Month. The impacts of preventable chronic diseases are increasing at alarming rates, with the costs of obesity reaching $80 billion annually, in the U.S. alone. Employers have a special opportunity to affect their employees in a way that few other institutions do. Supportive social communities, such as the workplace, can help improve employees’ health, increase their productivity, and lower overall healthcare costs. As we look ahead to the future of healthcare we know that employers will need to play a central role in maintaining and improving the health of their employees, and as company dedicated to Our Credo, we remain committed to the health and well-being of the men and women who work with us throughout the world.
