Living Our Values

Three women smile while stretching on a running track alt
Our Commitment to Transparency and Accountability
Our Commitment to Transparency and Accountability

t Johnson & Johnson, we believe good health is the foundation of vibrant lives, thriving communities and forward progress. And for more than 130 years, we have aimed to keep people well at every age and every stage of life.

Since our company’s inception, we have been committed to using our reach and size for good. We strive to improve access and affordability, create healthier communities, and put a healthy mind, body and environment within reach of everyone, everywhere.

As we advance our vision of a healthier world for all, we are guided by the values outlined in Our Credo. From its creation more than 75 years ago, Our Credo has declared how we will work and the stakeholders we will serve, setting a clear example of transparency and accountability. Today, we continue to live our values by setting ambitious goals with clear measures of success for all the ways in which we are changing the trajectory of health—through diversity, sustainability and community impact and by communicating openly and consistently about our work across our Pharmaceutical, MedTech and Consumer Health business sectors.

This approach enables stakeholders to make informed decisions about their interactions with Our Company. It also allows us to measure and track how we are delivering on our commitments through disclosures that give clarity into our practices and progress. We operate with Transparency and Accountability because it is the right thing to do and because these values are critical to advancing our goal of changing the trajectory of health for humanity.

Further uniting all of us at Johnson & Johnson, Our Health for Humanity 2025 Goals focus our citizenship and sustainability efforts where we believe Our Company can achieve the greatest societal impact.

How We Live Our Credo Values

With a workforce of more than 130,000 brilliant minds, we live Our Credo values every day by expanding access to healthcare; advancing public health; championing diversity, equity and inclusion; and supporting environmental health.

We are relentless in our focus to improve access to our innovative medicines, vaccines, devices and diagnostics in all countries—especially for underserved populations in resource-limited settings within the United States and all around the world. By continuously challenging ourselves to apply our expertise and partnering power to expand global equitable access, we enable our medicines and technologies to be more readily accessible for patients and health systems. Our actions are industry leading and have helped transform access for HIV, Tuberculosis, Ebola, Neglected Tropical Diseases and more.

Sharing Our Progress and Our Policies

Johnson & Johnson’s 2021 Health for Humanity Report details our progress in sustainability. It is also our primary source of annual disclosure on environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and should be reviewed in conjunction with disclosures on the ESG Policies & Positions page.
Through our annual Janssen U.S. Transparency Report, we provide policymakers and patients with useful information about what drives the cost of healthcare, including the cost of prescription medicines. We also want to shed light on the aspects of our health system that stand in the way of patients getting needed care and, ultimately, advance the dialogue about how to deliver greater access to medicines at a more manageable cost.
Our Responsibility Standards for Suppliers reflect our internal values and the expectations of external stakeholders, such as customers, regulators, investors and the public. We find business relationships are more productive and effective when they are built on trust, mutual respect and common values—and we seek relationships with suppliers who share our vision. We believe that when these guiding principles are followed, both businesses and communities realize economic, social and environmental benefits.
At Johnson & Johnson, we believe acting ethically and responsibly is not only the right thing to do but also the right thing to do for our business. Our Johnson & Johnson Code of Business Conduct ensures that we hold ourselves and how we do business to a high standard, allowing us to fulfill our obligations to the many stakeholders we serve. Effective March 30, 2020, Johnson & Johnson amended its Code of Business Conduct to provide enhanced guidance on addressing the evolving business environment.
The third annual Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Impact Review reflects on our diversity, equity and inclusion journey. At Johnson & Johnson, diverse perspectives, cultures and experiences have helped spark transformative healthcare solutions for more than 130 years. We continue to challenge ourselves on what it means to prioritize diversity and inclusion in every business decision we make. We leverage our DEI strategy, policies, programs and culture of belonging to provide our workforce the support and opportunities they need to help create a healthier, more equitable world.
Johnson & Johnson plays a major role in advancing human health and improving patient outcomes. Quality is a fundamental value. We believe our patients and consumers deserve consistent, reliable and high quality every time they use a product from the Johnson & Johnson family of companies. Specifically, in the healthcare industry, many of our products play a very significant role in improving people’s lives—products that patients and consumers rely on every day. Focusing on quality and compliance throughout our product lifecycle is key to ensuring continuity of supply for those who need our products to achieve or maintain good health and wellbeing. On a day-to-day basis, attention to quality is just good business, creating cost and resource efficiencies, which in turn help us become a more sustainable company over the long term.
Johnson & Johnson plays a leading role in advancing sustainable business. Sustainability both protects our business from risks—such as climate change risk, reputational risk and more—and furnishes us with opportunities to engage more deeply with those impacted by our business and, therefore, understand how we may better meet their expectations and needs. In this way, we are better equipped to allocate resources to deliver the health solutions the world needs most. Given our large size and geographical breadth, it is imperative that we take a proactive leadership approach to sustainability and maintain a supportive governance structure to keep us on track.
Our Credo provides Johnson & Johnson with a clear, compelling, and enduring reminder of our responsibility to the environment. It states we must be good citizens in the global community, and we must protect the environment and natural resources we are privileged to use. We believe that the health of people is inextricably linked to the health of the planet. We have been setting public environmental performance goals for nearly 30 years. As the world’s largest, most broadly based healthcare company, we remain committed to improving the environmental health of the places where we live, work and sell our products today—and for generations to come.
Johnson & Johnson understands that climate health can affect human health. In fact, we’re seeing climate change impact health in new ways by changing infectious disease patterns and increasing the risk of drought and food insecurity. We have taken sustained, long-term action to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and we are encouraging our suppliers to do the same. We also support responsible climate and energy policy around the world.
Every day, we work to put people first—from proactive and transparent medical safety surveillance, to groundbreaking real-world evidence applications, pediatric clinical research advancements, early access innovation and more. Our Chief Medical Officers drive medical safety excellence and innovation across our Pharmaceuticals, Medical Devices and Consumer Health sectors. Johnson & Johnson is committed to ethical decision-making and transparency to guide every decision we make.
At Johnson & Johnson, we blend heart, science and ingenuity to profoundly change the trajectory of health for humanity. This aspiration includes impacting patients, consumers and all others who use our products, as well as the health of our employees, our communities and the planet. In our policies and positions, we address a broad range of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues that are important to Johnson & Johnson and our stakeholders.
