Tackling the Human Energy Crisis
Tackling the Human Energy Crisis

Twenty-five years ago, life seemed much simpler, didn’t it? We didn’t have as much technology to stay connected, work was confined to the hours of 9-5 and the pace just seemed a little more relaxed. In those days, when we left work, it was actually hard to find us; people had to go out of their way to contact us. Today, we live in a very different world and balancing demands of work and family – especially when all aspects seem to run 24/7 – takes more time and effort.

If you’re nodding in agreement, it is not just a matter of “remembering the good ol’ days;” it’s the result of a legitimate human energy crisis. If you look at our current society – whether it’s the growing rates of obesity, diabetes or general inactivity – we’ve become a multi-tasking, overscheduled culture with very few boundaries in both our personal and professional lives.

The good news is there are some basic principles of sport science that we can apply to every aspect of our lives to help manage our energy. For example:

  • Do some form of physical activity daily; some exercise is always better than nothing at all
  • Read a bed time story with your children every night to help you connect with what matters most in your life
  • Strategically disengage every 90-120 minutes to help you perform at your best
  • Focus your energy on what you want, not on what you don’t want

These principles – and many others – can help everyday people fight the human energy crisis and perform at their personal best as employees, family members, friends and selves. To help educate and raise awareness about the importance of energy management and the principles that are its foundation, Johnson & Johnson’s Wellness & Prevention, Inc. team is proud to co-sponsor the Global Alliance for Health & Performance (Global Alliance) in partnership with the American College of Sports Medicine. Launched just last week, the Global Alliance provides a new and innovative approach to addressing the human energy crisis. The alliance comprises of leaders in education, business, government and sports with the goal of applying the principles of sport science and energy management to develop programs and resources that will help individuals and organizations achieve optimal performance in business and their daily lives.

I know first-hand that the complexities of today’s world can become overwhelming, but I also know from experience that practicing these energy management principles can make a difference. Today, I consciously and intentionally carve out time for me – whether that is spending time with my sons, playing tennis, or working out with a trainer. The knowledge and awareness of these principles allows me to improve my quality of life.

I’m proud to work for a company that recognizes and prioritizes the importance of energy management and I know you can benefit from these principles as well.

The next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, think about what you can do to feel a sense of recovery and take the next steps toward defeating this energy crisis and improving your own life. Click here to read about applying sport science and energy management principles.
