By caring for the world one person at a time, we aspire to help billions of people live longer, healthier, happier lives. This aspiration inspires and unites the approximately 128,000 employees of Johnson & Johnson across more than 275 operating companies in 60 countries. We embrace research and science – bringing innovative ideas, products and services to advance the health and well-being of people. For more than 125 years, the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies has been committed to caring for people around the world.
With $71.3 billion in 2013 sales, Johnson & Johnson, through its family of companies, is the world's most comprehensive and broadly based manufacturer of health care products, as well as a provider of related services, for the consumer, pharmaceutical, and medical devices and diagnostics markets.
Strong financial results for 2013 reflected continued sales momentum in many parts of the business driven by a focus on delivering meaningful innovation in health care to patients and customers. Johnson & Johnson has achieved 30 consecutive years of adjusted earnings* increases and 51 consecutive years** of dividend increases. Its enduring market leadership in health care is illustrated by the fact that about 70 percent of its sales in 2013 came from products with No. 1 or No. 2 global market share positions. Approximately 25 percent of 2013 sales came from new products introduced in the last five years.
Johnson & Johnson delivered strong results in 2013 led by the outstanding performance in our Pharmaceutical business, the strength of key brands in our U.S. over-the-counter (OTC) and other Consumer businesses and continued progress in integrating Synthes into our Medical Devices and Diagnostics business. We also advanced our longer-term growth drivers, bringing innovative solutions to the global health care market and executing with excellence.
At the foundation of our business is a fundamental commitment to Our Credo, which was written in 1943 by Robert Wood Johnson, then Chief Executive Officer and son of one of the Company’s founders. Our Credo eloquently defines the common values of our employees and establishes the business values and philosophy that guide all our operating companies worldwide. Our Credo puts patients and customers first, then our employees, our communities and our shareholders.
With Our Credo as a foundation, our long-standing operating model has four strategic principles: being broadly based in human health; managing our business for the long term; taking a decentralized management approach; and focusing on our people and values. In today’s highly competitive global marketplace, it is also essential that we focus on the critical drivers of our future growth: to create value through innovation, to extend our global reach with local focus, to execute with excellence in everything we do, and to inspire leadership with purpose among the people who carry on the Johnson & Johnson legacy.
The Medical Devices and Diagnostics segment produces a broad range of innovative products used primarily by health care professionals in the fields of orthopaedics, neurovascular, surgery, vision care, diabetes care, infection prevention, diagnostics, cardiovascular disease, sports medicine, and aesthetics.
The Pharmaceutical segment’s broad portfolio focuses on unmet medical needs across several therapeutic areas: cardiovascular & metabolism, immunology, infectious diseases and vaccines, neuroscience and pain, and oncology.
The Consumer segment includes a broad range of products used in the baby care, skin care, oral care, wound care and women’s health care fields, as well as nutritional and OTC pharmaceutical products, and wellness and prevention platforms.
Across all our businesses, the leadership of Johnson & Johnson is looking toward the future with a clear understanding of the challenges and with excitement about the extraordinary opportunities that exist to improve the quality of people's lives around the world.
