The challenge

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a national leader in advanced haematology and cellular therapies.

As demand for these innovative treatments grows, increasing pressure has been placed on inpatient capacity and patient flow, particularly around the timely discharge of medically fit patients.

Our shared goal

The Trust partnered with J&J to understand where delays were occurring and identify actions that would:
  • Support earlier discharge
  • Protect outpatient performance
  • Ensure that investment in specialist therapies delivers sustainable value.

What we did

Through multidisciplinary workshops, six core haematology pathways were mapped using a structured transformation toolkit.

The analysis highlighted strong clinical outcomes alongside operational challenges, including:
  • Variation in discharge processes
  • Limited pharmacy availability
  • Reluctance of discharge lounges to accept haematology patients
  • Reliance on inconsistent community provision.

The impact

High impact, sustainable system level interventions were identified.

This enabled consultants to balance ward and clinic activity more effectively, strengthening resilience as services continue to grow
