90 years of innovation in Schaffhausen: from Cilag to Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson in Switzerland is celebrating 90 years of innovation in Schaffhausen, where the site, established as Cilag AG in 1936, has grown into an important pharmaceutical manufacturing location with worldwide reach.

Rooted in local heritage and long-standing global connections, the site reflects an important milestone in J&J’s history. When Cilag became part of the company in 1959, one of its earliest expansions outside the United States, it marked the beginning of a lasting presence in Switzerland. Since then, the site has contributed to healthcare innovation and delivered medicines to patients worldwide. The local celebrations coincide with J&J’s global 140-year anniversary in 2026.

From local beginnings to global reach

The origins of today’s site trace back to Dr. Bernhard Joos, who returned to Schaffhausen in the 1930s after gaining experience in the United States. In 1936, he founded Cilag (Chemical Industrial Laboratory AG), laying the foundation for decades of pharmaceutical development.

Early progress was rapid. Within just a few years, several new medicines had been developed and introduced to the market, and by the post-war period the company had begun expanding beyond Switzerland into international markets.

The acquisition by J&J in 1959 marked a turning point. It provided access to global research and development capabilities and supported the continued growth of the site. From the 1990s onward, sustained investment in facilities and technologies further strengthened its role within the broader J&J network.

90 years of innovation in Schaffhausen

Today’s Schaffhausen site reflects over CHF 1 billion invested in infrastructure over the last 25 years, with continuous investment and expansion to increase capacity and prepare for future therapies.

The site also supports the introduction of new therapies and, as the largest private employer in the Schaffhausen region, maintains close ties to the local community, contributing to the regional economy through collaboration with many local businesses.

At our J&J Schaffhausen site, we combine 90 years of local heritage with a clear focus on delivering high-quality and innovative medicines to patients around the world. I’m proud of what our teams in Schaffhausen have built over the past decades, and I feel honored to be part of this team. Their dedication and expertise make a real difference every day, both for patients and for our community here in Schaffhausen.
