Bridging Industry and Academia: Shaping the Next Generation of Healthcare Innovators

On October 3rd, we had the opportunity to engage with a group of students during the MedTalk event organized by the Health Science Club. Over 100 students from ETH Zürich and the University of Zurich (UZH) explored the world of Johnson & Johnson, gaining insights into our company including a deep-dive into one of our MedTech solutions, and the diverse career opportunities we offer in Switzerland. This event marked just one milestone in our ongoing collaboration with the Health Science Club – a student’s organization of ETH and UZH dedicated to bridging the gap between academia and the healthcare industry. Since the start of our partnership in 2022, we have co-created different programs that empower students to become future leaders in healthcare and collaboratively drive innovation in the industry.

Highlights of our initiatives:

  • Successful Hackathon: In 2024, our jointly organized Hackathon encouraged students to tackle real-world healthcare challenges, resulting in innovative solutions and actionable strategies for Swiss hospitals. Under the motto “Hack4Care”, 20 students worked for one day on issues related to staff shortage and planning tools in the operating room and had to convince the visibly astonished jury of their ideas at the end of the day. Some of these ideas were subsequently presented to our partner hospitals and are now finding their way into practice.
  • Internship opportunities: Also in 2024, a new talent program has been launched, where we have welcomed a group of students who completed a six-month internship across various departments at Johnson & Johnson, gaining invaluable hands-on experience and contributing fresh perspectives that helped shape our journey. We continue to offer internship opportunities on a bi-annual basis to nurture the next generation of healthcare innovators. If you are interested, please check out our careers portal for open positions.
  • Career development & knowledge sharing: From our annual talent event at one of our J&J campuses to presentations at universities, our initiatives continue to inspire students and prepare them for future roles in healthcare.

Why it matters

Our partnership with the Health Science Club is an important collaboration for cultivating the next generation of healthcare innovators. By providing students with industry exposure and practical experiences, we foster a pipeline of talented individuals ready to drive breakthrough solutions in the industry. In turn, the fresh perspectives from students and interns lead to innovative ideas that help shape Johnson & Johnson’s journey while building a sustainable ecosystem where innovation can flourish.

Together, we are creating progress – empowering students today to revolutionize healthcare tomorrow.
