2019 Superstars of STEM

ohnson & Johnson is committed to supporting programs that increase opportunities for girls and women to explore and succeed in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. We have been a long-standing supporter of the New York Academy of Sciences' Global STEM Alliance and their 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures program.

In July 2019, participants of the 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures program were invited to take part in the second annual Superstars of STEM essay contest, which asked them to share stories about modern-day women in STEM who inspire them. To see why science excites this year’s contest winner and four finalists, read their essays.

Spotlight on Stories

Salma Alrowaie from Saudi Arabia profiles Dr. Rita Levi-Montalcini, an Italian Nobel laureate whose pioneering achievements in gender and religious equality are as impressive as her notable accomplishments in the field of neurobiology.
Sriya Lingampalli of California shares the inspirational story of Dr. Lynn Conway, a Silicon Valley pioneer and LGBTQ activist who has bravely and unwaveringly fought against the “silencing” of women that has pervaded the male-dominated fields of computer science and electrical engineering.
Alexa Loste from Germany tells the story of Dr. Hope Jahren, an American geochemist and geobiologist whose book “Lab Girl” gave Loste valuable, often gritty new insights into the scientific community.
Iarina Vancea from Romania profiles Dr. Ana Aslan, a Romanian who went against her mother’s wishes to become a doctor. Among numerous other accomplishments, she ultimately founded the Geriatric Institute of Bucharest, paving inroads for other women passionate about STEM.
Jaslyn Wee from the Philippines shares the story of Dr. Fe del Mundo, revered in Wee’s home country as the grande dame of pediatrics who had a “magic touch” with patients.
