The Dr. Guislain “Breaking the Chains of Stigma” Award, established in 2012 in partnership with the Dr. Guislain Museum, recognizes an individual, project or organization that has made an exceptional contribution to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness through innovative social, cultural or scientific initiatives.
The award honors Dr. Joseph Guislain (1790-1860), a driven activist for people with mental illness and the first Belgian psychiatrist to provide scientifically-based treatment for these individuals.
The 2020 Dr. Guislain Award recipient is Grégoire Ahongbonon. For more than 30 years, he has devoted himself to demystifying mental illness and organizing contemporary psychiatric services for people in need across West Africa. Read more about Grégoire’s achievements.
