J&J Impact Ventures Invests in Penda Health to Expand Access to Primary Healthcare in Kenya

Like many countries in Africa, Kenya has a low doctor-to-patient ratio, and millions of people do not have access to healthcare that is both high-quality and affordable. Penda Health was founded with a mission to bridge the gap between costly private healthcare and overcrowded public facilities, providing a new model for delivering care to families and communities.

J&J Impact Ventures, an investment fund within the Johnson & Johnson Foundation, recently invested in Penda Health to support the expansion of the company to reach new patients and clinical sites.

We started Penda Health because we wanted patient-centered healthcare to be available and accessible in everyone’s neighborhood. Today, I am so proud to work alongside hundreds of Penda team members who go above and beyond every day for patients and families.
Stephanie Koczela
CEO & Co-founder, Penda Health

Founded in 2012, Penda Health operates a network of primary care clinics across Nairobi, and has grown to become one of the largest outpatient providers in East Africa. In addition to the skilled clinical team, Penda also delivers tech-enabled care through integrated electronic medical records as well as remote telehealth capabilities. The results have created significantly lower costs of care, but also consistently high rates of patient satisfaction.

“Penda Health has established a strong community reputation that is grounded in patient trust and enhanced by new technologies. We are excited to work with the Penda team to continue building on that foundation so it can grow beyond Nairobi and eventually into other countries in Africa.” - Dana Deardorff, Global Director, Impact Ventures
