J&J Impact Ventures invests in Rology to expand access to critical, high-quality radiology diagnostics

By advancing innovative teleradiology solutions, more patients receive the critical imaging interpretations they need—when and where they need them most.

The demand for diagnostic imaging services continues to increase, but there is a shortage of qualified radiologists globally—especially in lower-income countries where there may be an average of only 1 radiologist per 1,000,000 people. The result is that many patients experience significant delays, misdiagnoses and negative outcomes. J&J Impact Ventures, an investment fund within the J&J Foundation, has invested in Rology to address these critical issues.

Rology bridges the gap between health providers and qualified radiologists, equipping them with an end-to-end teleradiology platform and AI models that ensure faster, high-quality diagnoses. With these new tools, hospitals and imaging centers in lower-resourced communities are able to efficiently transfer imaging scans and connect with radiology specialists in Rology’s network around the world who provide expert assessment and reports.

Founded in 2017, Rology has now completed more than 1.3 million radiology reports through a network of 182 radiologists. The company has become a critical infrastructure layer in healthcare systems across Africa and the Middle East, covering both private and public health institutions with limited access to radiology services. Rology’s proprietary AI tools are currently used across eight different imaging modalities and 12 radiology sub-specialties to improve diagnostic speed, accuracy and operational efficiency.

This investment enables Rology to accelerate its work of supporting radiologists, health workers and entire health systems through advanced AI services, ultimately expanding access to high-quality radiology across the Middle East and Africa.

“Rology’s cost-effective, AI-powered teleradiology services provide an innovative way for patients to access care,” said David Higgins, Investment Director at Impact Ventures. “We were proud to first support them through Villgro Africa’s AI for Health accelerator program in 2022-23, and are excited to now invest in their work building the future of radiology in emerging markets.”

J&J Impact Ventures is an investment fund within the J&J Foundation, supporting a global portfolio of early-stage companies transforming access to quality and affordable healthcare.
