Artificial Intelligence—advancing healthcare from New Jersey to the world

By combining deep understanding of technology and science with our people’s determination, Johnson & Johnson is powering the future of human health.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing healthcare—from improving surgical training and procedures to equipping healthcare providers with insights and personalizing care for patients.

“At J&J, we are applying AI in prioritized areas that deliver the highest value, focusing on finding solutions to pressing health challenges and advancing our impact for patients,” said Jim Swanson, Johnson & Johnson’s Chief Information Officer. “We believe that technology, paired with science and people, has the potential to not just incrementally improve, but to truly transform healthcare.”

By combining data, AI and machine learning (ML), and advanced computing with our scientific expertise, Johnson & Johnson is setting a new pace for discovering life-changing treatments for patients in need.

And, in our home state of New Jersey, which we have proudly called home since our founding in 1886, we are strengthening the state’s efforts to establish an AI Hub and solidify its leadership in AI innovation through collaboration with government and academia.

Here are five ways Johnson & Johnson is using AI/ML to help advance healthcare in New Jersey and around the world:

    1.

    Advancing research and development
    Advancing research and development

Through AI and digital health technologies, we are accelerating drug discovery, advancing clinical trials that are representative of the patients we serve, and virtually prototyping medical technology to gain better insights into the safety, efficacy, and performance of our products.

    2.

Driving greater precision in measuring disease severity and treatment response.
Driving greater precision in measuring disease severity and treatment response.

We are applying AI/ML to data sets – from digital images to videos to sound recordings – to identify novel biomarkers and clinical endpoints that can help us develop and deliver the right medicines for the right patients at the right time — across oncology, immunology, and neuroscience.

    3.

Improving surgical procedures and enabling more personalized care.

Surgeons can use AI to analyze a patient’s anatomy, which recommends which instrument is needed to treat the specific patient and recommends a correction plan.

    4.

    Helping treatments reach patients faster.

While supplier issues, economic disruptions, and market trends can affect the supply chain, we use AI to help provide a more accurate prediction of supply and demand for products in hospitals, pharmacies, clinics and other healthcare facilities.

    5.

Analyzing the operating room (OR) for efficiency and physician learning.

Using our digital ecosystem for surgery and AI-based video assessment tools, surgeons can connect via telepresence and share OR video with residents and peers. These systems can also capture significant moments from surgical procedures --- offering surgeons valuable post-case analysis, quality-improvement strategies and other learning opportunities.
