Johnson & Johnson brings New Jersey students to Washington, D.C. to build civic leadership

Eleven high school students from New Jersey—each representing a different congressional district—traveled to Washington, D.C., earlier this year to participate in the Close Up Foundation’s Washington, D.C. civic engagement program as Johnson & Johnson Scholars.

Sponsored annually by Johnson & Johnson, the weeklong immersive experience gave the scholars a front-row seat to the nation’s democratic process. From walking the halls of the U.S. Capitol to debating public policy in a mock Congress, the students engaged deeply in the systems that shape American society. They also visited monuments and memorials, participated in seminars with policy experts, and attended committee hearings and legislative briefings on Capitol Hill.

A highlight of the week was “Capitol Hill Day,” where the scholars met with members of the New Jersey delegation, including U.S. Sen. Andy Kim and U.S. Rep. Tom Kean Jr. The students proudly introduced themselves as Johnson & Johnson Scholars, sharing how civic learning is influencing their goals.

I found it amazing that we were able to meet senators… We were able to meet with Sen. Kim and talk to him for 15 to 20 minutes. I just find it incredible that I was able to chat with someone who has so much power and can change lives.

The students also connected with Johnson & Johnson Government Affairs & Policy executives, including Jane Adams, Carla Cartwright, Larry Camm and Kelly Waters, who shared their career paths and discussed the importance of public service, policy and advocacy in the company’s work.

Students were selected not only for their academic achievements but also for their demonstrated passion for civic engagement. Many are involved in student government, Model UN and advocacy organizations in their local communities.

When my gov teacher told me about this, I was surprised… My favorite experience has been the workshops. Getting to know everyone deeper and seeing all the different opinions and perspectives has really been eye-opening.
