AImpact: Using AI to innovate access to healthcare

A message from Dana Deardorff

AI is rapidly changing the world. But like other powerful technologies, it has the potential for both significant benefit as well as harm depending on how it’s used. This is certainly true in healthcare, where the stakes are often life or death. Acknowledging these risks, we are encouraged by the potential for AI to transform access to care. Several companies in the J&J Impact Ventures portfolio are pioneering new AI technology and tools intentionally developed to improve care for patients in communities with limited resources.

Penda Health has implemented AI Consult software in primary care clinics in Kenya, in collaboration with OpenAI, and recently published one of the first real-world studies showing the ability to improve the quality of clinical decision-making and reduce potential errors. Qure.ai, a company within our fund HealthQuad, has already helped millions of patients in over 100 countries around the world with AI assessment of diagnostic imaging for lung cancer, tuberculosis and other diseases. And Turn.io has developed an AI-powered chat platform to empower a range of healthcare organizations, along with an accelerator program supported by J&J Foundation to improve health access.

In addition to our existing portfolio, we’re also excited to announce several new investments in companies on the leading edge of innovation and impact, utilizing AI and other technologies to improve patient care by expanding access:

  • ThinkMD: AI clinical decision support platform for health workers to triage and diagnose patients at the point of care. Learn more.
  • Signalytic: infrastructure and connectivity to ensure remote facilities can utilize digital health tools, regardless of internet and power outages. Learn more.
  • Phelcom: high-quality, low-cost and portable retinal imaging devices for vision screening and diagnostics in rural areas and other resource-limited settings. Learn more.
  • Rology: equips health providers with AI-assisted teleradiology for improved quality and efficiency of diagnostic capabilities. Learn more.

Best,
